Turbotax

I’m a last minute tax guy, so this post is probably late, but I thought I would share a review of the software I use for taxes.

I know Turbotax (affiliate link) has had a tough PR year and certainly didn’t do themselves any favors. Not clearly spelling out the price increase for anyone with more complicated taxes, prior to them completely finishing the process was definitely not cool.

Luckily my taxes have been really simple to date. The blog doesn’t make anything yet, and unfortunately I don’t have a side business or rental property yet to complicate things. I’ve been using Turbotax since 2008 so I decided to stick with the tried and true option.

So why do I use Turbotax?

Dead simple interface

It’s about as intuitive as any site I’ve ever used. I don’t think I’ve ever had a question about how to use it.

Idiot proof guidance

Rather than talk about complicated tax forms, the site asks you logical, simple questions. Did you get married? Any side income? Did you have an HSA? The site uses natural language and logical questions to make the process simple and intuitive for any user. The site takes you step by step through every single line for income, credits, and every other potential permutation you may need to deal with.

Data Continuity

The site remembers me from last year, imports all my same data and shows me year over year comparisons in each category to help ensure it all looks reasonable. This simple fact will keep me coming back until there’s a change that really affects me. The fact that I don’t have to reenter 90% of my data is worth it’s weight in gold to me. 

Conclusion

I know they took a lot of flack this year, but Turbotax is still a fast, intuitive, and simple website to get your taxes done. I’m happy to spend the $60 to get it done quick and easy. Check them out.
