Winter Garden Update

Adam Garden

I haven’t put up a garden post in a while, so I thought I would let you know what we’ve been up to!

Houston gardening is a whole lot easier in the winter than the summer. Our summer temperatures make gardening rough. Daily watering, huge bug problems (some of which nothing stop) and other things make it a daily battle.

The winter it gets a lot easier. Our temperatures become super moderate and it’s actually the best time of the year to be in Houston. Temps are typically between 40 and 60 and only occasionally dip below freezing. You can often still get away with shorts/jeans and a t-shirt, but you aren’t constantly sweating. Some years we’ve needed to cover our trees in sheets with Christmas lights, but not this year.

Unlike summer crops of beans, tomatoes and peppers, winter gardening is basically everything you put in to a salad. This year we grew 3 types of lettuce, 2 types of kale, bok choy, broccoli and assorted herbs.

As usual the garden is a mixed bag.

Broccoli plants came in strong; the actual broccoli, is finally starting to show up

Curly leaf and Dino Kale rocking.

Fresh Cilantro is so much better (and cheaper!) from your own backyard.

Broccoli with Chard trying to make an appearance underneath.

Plum tree starting to bloom!

Rocket Greens earns it name.

Lemon Tree made delicious lemonade, lemon curd and lemon salt.

Potted Mint plant.

Cilantro, Parsley, Spinach and Kale.

Oranges had another strong year.

Arugula in the far left corner with assorted failures and weeds.

Rocket Salad came through strong.

As usual anytime you grow anything, some of it works and some of it fails. Always hard to tell what will work so you do your best and see what happens. Get out there and grow something!
